What is Hevel? Hevel is the Hebrew word for smoke or vapor. The idea is that it is void of meaning and lacking any substance. Hevel is the Original Hebrew word used in Ecclesiastes 1:2 'Hevel! Hevel!" says the Teacher. "Utterly Hevel! Everything is Hevel. "Setting your mind on things of this world (Hevel is described as being as worthwhile as chasing the wind. Followers of Jesus are instead called to set their minds on things eternal; or things with eternal value. We are called out of the smoke of mirrors, out of the vanity of this world, and out of the smallness of hevel.
